I can’t believe it’s been two years since I saw you last. Writing this from our bedroom, I can still feel your hospital bed in the room. A glance over to the space it once held, and you are immediately here with me.

A few days before you passed, You told me that an angel had come to visit you in a dream. He had told you it was going to be time soon, and that you knew it was time too. You were so sad to be leaving us, and also comforted that there was something much bigger shepherding your transition. Eternal peace was on the horizon.

I see you everywhere. In our children. In our friends. In our community.

And also, in the numbers.

It took me a while to see the signs - but, you were always a numbers guy. Sales forecasts and blackjack were always your jam. It started with 16s and 28s, showing up on lunch tickets and deli receipts. Numbers of importance in our lives.

But, the 4s I didn’t see coming. Unexpected, and yet now so clear.

On July 4th, Gennie and I found your basketball yearbook in your childhood desk. We gleefully turned the pages looking for you. Passing images of your friends in uniform - friends that still are still my friends today.

Basketball has always been a passion, and that black and white picture was a true representation of your love for the game. A love you passed along to your children too.

As I smiled at you, you smiled back at me - and Gennie said, “Look he is wearing #4 - same as Olivia!” I gasped. A number given to her at random. Honestly, I thought your number was 24 - but maybe that was Kobe Bryant? So hard to keep you guys straight. Your talent was so similar. 😉

And then I remembered, she wasn’t the only #4. Luke had gotten a new uniform 6 months ago, a switch from #22 to #4. I feverishly looked through my photos to find proof. I showed Gennie - we both smiled.

You were giving us 4s the whole time - and we didn’t even know it.

So here I am..counting my 16s, 28s and 4s. And every blessing of loving you.

Thank you for this life. For believing in us. We believe too.

It’s Friday, and that’s a wrap on the week! Hope each of you have amazing plans to enjoy the last few weekends of “official” summer.

She wanted marble. She also has a family. The combination made her feel a bit uneasy. Here’s how we made it all work.

Our client loved the look of marble, but she knows her family well enough to know she needed something that could hold up under some serious pressure. So the countertop, and the backsplash up to 18” (aka the spaghetti sauce splash zone), became an etch resistant porcelain slab from our friends @irg_stoneboutique.

But we weren’t ready to give up on marble entirely. The kitchen was still craving that texture and depth only marble can give — so we layered in a tumbled bardiglio tile from @artistictileandstone above the porcelain, set in herringbone. The color plays beautifully off the @farrowandball Selvedge Blue on the cabinets, drenching the whole room in one cohesive palette.

Proof again that beauty and durability can in fact be friends.

When the client’s favorite color was “anything animal print” - we naturally found a wallpaper with a little ROAR—and drenched the rest of the room in a moody, coordinating hue.

But the walls were only the beginning. The sink traveled even farther: a fluted Calacatta Viola piece sourced from a new supplier in Turkey. We vetted them from scratch and coordinated every detail over early-morning overseas calls.

Because the right answer for a client’s home isn’t always close by. Sometimes it’s thousands of miles away.

The distance doesn’t matter to our team -getting it right does.

Every member of the family deserves customized design, including Ozzie and Frankie.

Our client had one non-negotiable request: these two brothers needed to be able to see each other while they were in their crates. So instead of separating them, we created custom built-ins with a wire mesh divider between the two spaces. They each get their own cozy spot, while still keeping an eye on one another.

It’s one of our favorite custom details in this home-and proof that the best design solutions are the ones tailored to the people (and pets) who live there.
